Tidigare i år presenterade Smart, som ägs av tyska Mercedes-tillverkaren Daimler, och Nissan ett omfattande produktionssamarbete.
Tillsammans ska tillverkarna ta fram en ny bakhjulsdriven plattform som ska användas till nästa Smart Fortwo och nästa Renault Twingo. Försäljningsstart planeras till 2013.
Men dessförinnan ska Nissan bygga en femsitsig modell med fem dörrar och Smart-emblem för den amerikanska marknaden.
Bilen ska säljas via Smarts återförsäljare i USA från fjärde kvartalet 2011.
Nytt försök med fem dörrar
Tvåsitsiga Smart Fortwo introducerades 2008 i USA och var inledningsvis framgångsrik när bränslepriserna i landet sköt i höjden. Men nu har försäljningen backat och återförsäljarna vill ha en ny modell.
Den femsitsiga bilen bygger på Nissan Micra men har anpassats med Smart-detaljer.
Smart har tidigare sålt en femsitsig bil i form av Smart Forfour, baserad på Mitsubishi Colt, som byggdes mellan 2004 och 2006. Men försäljningen gick dåligt och modellen lades ned.
